7200A-PFAS System

OTM-50 is a draft analytical method developed by the U.S. EPA to identify and quantify volatile fluorinated compounds (VFCs) emitted from stationary sources. Air samples are collected in evacuated canisters and analyzed by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS).
This method plays a critical role in verifying the destruction of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in high-temperature treatment systems such as incinerators. When PFAS compounds are not fully mineralized, they can break down into lighter volatile byproducts—many of which are toxic or persistent in the environment.
Originally designed to evaluate PFAS destruction efficiency, OTM-50 is now being explored for broader use in industrial emissions testing and ambient air monitoring. Its compound list includes 30 VFCs, ranging from ultra-volatile species like CF₄ to more complex fluorinated organics, providing a detailed chemical fingerprint of incomplete PFAS combustion.

Why It Matters Now
Why Monitor PFAS in Air?
PFAS and VFCs are:
- Highly mobile and easily transported through the atmosphere
- Released during industrial processes, combustion, and product degradation
- Not effectively captured by legacy methods designed for heavier, less volatile compounds
As understanding of inhalation risk grows, airborne PFAS monitoring is rapidly becoming a regulatory priority.
Why Choose the Entech 7200A-PFAS Preconcentrator?
- Recovers all OTM-50 compounds, including ultra-volatiles like CF₄
- Complete recovery of all 30 OTM-50 compounds in a single 200cc run
- Eliminates CO₂ through a unique heart-cutting process
- Achieves low ppt sensitivity on modern GCMS and GCMSMS platforms
- Uses liquid nitrogen traps for fast cooldown and high throughput
- Includes a Heavy Organics Guardian (HOG) to protect GasPro columns
- Seamlessly integrates with Entech autosamplers including SkyCan and 7016D
- Fully compliant with OTM-50
Entech provides a complete OTM-50 Solution
Autosampler Compatibility and Throughput
To ensure consistent results and minimal carryover, Entech recommends a minimum 1.4L canister size for ambient PFAS analysis. The 7200A-PFAS supports three autosampler options:
SkyCan 40 (SK40)

SkyCan 75 (SK75)

7016D+ Autosampler

What Makes the 7200A-PFAS Unique
- Captures all OTM-50 analytes including CF₄ and C₂F₆ in one run
- Processes samples with up to 4% CO₂ and high relative humidity
- LN₂ cooling enables cycle times 3–4 times faster than Peltier-based systems
- Heavy Organics Guardian (HOG) prevents contamination from C9–C16 residues
- Eliminates dual-run requirements often needed in competing systems
- Low-ppt detection demonstrated using SIM/SRM with modern MS platforms
